From a cold start to a logged-in account. Five steps, in the order they happen, with what you should actually see at each one.

Step by step

1. Get a Tor Browser

A normal browser will not open an .onion address, and it will not open it the safe way even if you force it. Install Tor Browser for your system or phone. The setup page covers desktop, Android and iOS, plus what to do when the first connection looks broken.

2. Copy one of the addresses

Three addresses are above this text, each with a copy button. Take one. Do not retype it. These strings are long enough that a single swapped character opens a different site, and a different site will still look like AWazon.

3. Paste and wait

Paste into the address bar and press enter. The first connection takes a while: Tor is building a route through several relays, and nothing has cached anything. A white page for a minute is not an error. If you get a 'relay tunnel build failed' message, wait or try the other address; that page explains the message.

4. The access queue

What opens is probably not the market yet, but a plain page with a blue spinner: 'Do not refresh the page. Please wait... you are being forwarded to the market.' That is the market's own queue. Do not refresh, that puts you at the back again. How long it usually takes, and when to give up, is written out on its own page.

5. Log in or register

When the market opens, the login page asks for a username, a password and, if you turned it on, a two-factor code. That page goes through registration and 2FA. Nothing on these pages will ever ask for your password. The market asks for it on the market, inside the .onion address, nowhere else.

After you are in

The public pages are open without an account; orders, the wallet and feedback need the login.
